A load of 40,000 pounds of pineapple was spilled onto the southbound lanes of I-45 in Montgomery following a major big rig accident involving two 18-wheelers. The big rig accident occurred last night, at 11 p.m., in the southbound lanes of I-45 near the Montgomery and Walker County line.

Police state that the incident occurred when an 18-wheeler, carrying a load of pineapple, experienced a tire blowout. The truck tire blowout caused the truck to sway, and the trailer separated from the tractor. The trailer then struck the center wall before rolling into the southbound lanes, where it was struck by a second 18-wheeler, carrying truck parts. The impact tore the trailer open, sending 40,000 pounds of pineapple as well as truck debris and engine oil onto the road.

The driver of the truck carrying pineapples was injured, and was taken to a nearby hospital in Conroe, where he is in stable condition. The roads were closed for several hours as DPS worked to investigate the crash. They have since reopened.
