A fire broke out following a pipeline explosion in west Fort Bend County. The explosion occurred on Thursday afternoon at 15400 Jo Ann Lane, near where it intersects with FM 1952, between the cities of Orchard and Wallis.
The pipeline is owned by a natural gas transmission company called Energy Transfer. The company reported a release of natural gas from the 24-inch pipeline at about 10:25 a.m. Residents stated that the flames rose about 15 stories high, and news outlets reported that helicopter reporters could see the flames from 30 miles away.
Following the pipeline explosion, Fort Bend County residents were advised to evacuate as emergency crews worked for several hours to extinguish the flames. No injuries were reported, and no structures were damaged as a result of the explosion and fire.
Energy Transfer is investigating the incident to try to determine what caused it. Following the explosion, Energy Transfer released the following statement:
“Our control center immediately shut in the line and the area was secured. There were no injuries. By shutting in the line and isolating the impacted section of the pipeline line, the fire was allowed to safely burn itself by 12:30pm. All appropriate regulatory agencies have been notified. We will continue to provide updates as information becomes available.”
